Laptop or Desktop PC?

Choosing between a desktop PC or a laptop can be a difficult decision to make. Your choice ultimately should be based on how you plan to use your computer and the budget you have to spend on your purchase. One of the main criteria you should consider is the need for portability. If you have a need for your computer to be portable then a laptop could be a powerful tool, however if a laptop will simply act as a desktop with little need for portability then a desktop PC may be a better option, as well as being less expensive in general. One advantage the desktop has over the laptop concerns its ergonomic features. The smallness of a laptop can make it less comfortable to use and physically taxing due to the keyboard and the monitor screen being smaller than that of a desktop. The desktop PC’s design has evolved to ease the comfort of it’s users with the monitor display being at eye level and the keyboard allowing for correct positioning of the users back, arms & wrists which are important concerns especially if you will be using your computer for long periods of time.

Desktop PC’s are generally less expensive than a comparable laptop mainly due to the higher costs of smaller and more intricate components in a laptop. This also has an effect on the cost of repairs and upgrades. Since laptops are portable they are more prone to accidental damage than a desktop, also due to their size they are more susceptible to theft and unless you can secure your laptop then you should be prepared to take it with you wherever you go.

In summary. Desktops provide less expensive, more comfortable, powerful performance to meet your computing needs from a fixed location. Laptops provide performance to meet your computing needs from virtually anywhere. Laptops are generally more expensive, and for additional comfort you will pay more yet for extra "home base" components (eg larger monitor). So if you want to take advantage of the portability and increased productivity offered by laptops, then this could be the option for you. However, if portability is not important, then a desktop may make more sense.
