What is ICT?

ICT stands for 'Information Communications Technology.' There is not a universal definition which explains ‘exactly' what ICT is, because ICT is constantly evolving. The term Information and Communication Technology (ICT) comes from the convergence of telecommunication, computing and broadcasting through the use of digital information.

ICT covers any product that will store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically and is one of the important driving forces for modern development. With the advancement of Information and Communication Technology, we can live in the global village irrespective of distance with neither national and international boundaries.

There are many different kinds of digital technology which already exist to assist both businesses and individuals for example: PC's, email, DVD, broadband, mobile phones.

In the world of business, ICT is often categorised into two broad types of product:-
Traditional computer based technology; things you can typically do on a personal computer or using computers at home or at work, and;

Digital communication technologies which allow people and businesses to communicate and share information digitally. Some examples include:

Database software: Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Access; manage data in many forms, from basic lists through to complex material such as customer databases.
Word processing: Microsoft word; Allows us to write letters, invoicing, design simple forms, quotes, reports etc.
Spreadsheets: Microsoft Excel; Assists in the Analysis of financial information; calculations; and creates forecasting models.
Presentation Software: Microsoft Powerpoint; Design and edit presentations, either directly using a computer screen or projector. You may also publish your presentation on line to youtube or your own site.
Graphics Software: Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; Flash & Fireworks; these create and edit images such as logos, drawings or pictures for use in Desk Top Publishing, web sites and many other publications.

Accounting Packages: Sage, Oracle; Manage an organisation's accounts including revenues/sales, purchases, bank accounts etc. A wide range of systems are available ranging from basic packages suitable for small businesses through to sophisticated ones aimed at multinational companies.

Computer Aided Design - or CAD: which is the use of computers in the world of 3D design and development. Used primarily in architecture, engineering and electronics.

Customer relations management - or CRM: which allows companies to better understand their clients and customers by analysing data gathered from the client on their use of products and services etc.

The above list shows examples, and is not exhaustive by any means.

Communications - Apart from Internet a PC allows communication of information through Compact Discs, pen drives, printers, whether laser or ink-jet, flash memory cards and exchange of information within a local network of computers called a LAN.
